Why Is My VPN Not Working? Diagnose and Fix It in Order

Separate a failed tunnel from connected-with-no-internet, one-network blocks, site rejection, drops, and slow speeds—then use the shortest safe fix.

Quick answer

First turn the VPN off and confirm ordinary internet access works. Then try a different nearby server, switch protocols, fully restart and update the app, and remove another VPN or proxy conflict. If it says Connected but pages fail, reset custom DNS and reconnect so kill-switch routes are rebuilt. If every server still fails on multiple networks, test one paid replacement on the same device and keep it only if it passes the same test.

Symptom-first troubleshooting

Choose the exact symptom below; a failed tunnel and a connected tunnel with no internet need different fixes.

Check zero

Test without the VPN

If ordinary internet access is already broken, the VPN has no working path to use. Fix Wi-Fi, cellular, the router, or the ISP first.

Fastest VPN-side fix

Change one server

A server can be full, down, or badly routed. Try another nearby server before changing security settings.

If one network fails

Change the protocol

WireGuard UDP may be blocked. Try automatic/Smart mode, OpenVPN TCP, WireGuard TCP, or Stealth where supported.

Why is my VPN not working?

Choose what you can see right now. The result separates the likely fault from the next action.

Likely diagnosis

The tunnel is not forming

The usual causes are a broken base connection, one unavailable server, a blocked protocol, wrong credentials, an incorrect clock, or a security tool blocking the app.

  1. 1Confirm a website loads with the VPN off.
  2. 2Choose another nearby server.
  3. 3Switch WireGuard ↔ OpenVPN, or use the app’s automatic/Stealth mode.
  4. 4Update the app and set date and time automatically.

Decision point: If every server fails on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, check the provider status and account before changing router settings.

How to fix a VPN that is not working

Run these checks in order. Mark each completed step so you do not repeat random changes.

Match the fix to the exact failure

VPN connected but no internet

Rebuild DNS, routes, and kill-switch rules

Switch server first. Then disconnect inside the app, return custom DNS and split tunneling to default, and reconnect. Reinstall only if a stale network filter keeps returning.

VPN not connecting on Wi-Fi

Complete the portal, then change transport

Sign in to public Wi-Fi without the VPN, reconnect, and try a TCP or Stealth transport. If cellular works, the local network is the leading suspect.

Internet works only with VPN on

Check a stuck kill switch or DNS rule

Exit through the app instead of force-quitting it. On a trusted network, temporarily test with the kill switch off, then reset or reinstall the app if normal internet returns.

Login or subscription error

Do not change router settings

Reset the password, verify the subscription, device limit, and automatic date/time, then check the provider’s official status before reinstalling.

VPN keeps disconnecting

Remove power and app conflicts

Allow background activity, exclude the VPN from battery optimization, close other VPNs, and use a closer server. A kill switch can make each drop look like a full internet outage.

VPN is slow

Use the same route for the comparison

Record a no-VPN baseline, pick a nearby server, use WireGuard, and repeat. Do not compare a distant OpenVPN server with a nearby WireGuard server.
When the current VPN is the problem

If every basic fix fails, compare one paid replacement

Compare a replacement only after the current VPN fails across multiple servers and networks.

Platform checks that are safe to verify

Use operating-system documentation for the final settings path. Do not leave the firewall or antivirus disabled after a test.

Stop and ask the right owner in these cases

  • • A work VPN error names a certificate, company gateway, or managed policy: contact your IT team.
  • • Every device loses ordinary internet access: check the router or ISP, not the VPN app.
  • • One site rejects every VPN server: the destination controls access; do not assume the tunnel is broken.
  • • VPN use is restricted by a network or local rules: follow the applicable policy and law.
